Breve Discurso de Michael Jackson en la entrega de premios de la academia / Michael's speech on the Academy Awards

En la 65° ceremonia de los premios de la academia, Michael Jackson subió al escenario para anunciar a la ganadora de uno de los premios. En la misma oportunidad, se dirigió al publico para expresar un breve discurso en defensa de su inocencia. Comienzó planteando que cada ciudadano tiene, en Estados Unidos, derecho a un juicio justo, en el que se presuma la inocencia de los acusados hasta que se pruebe lo contrario. El artista, se manifestó seguro de que Dios le permitiría atravesar el proceso del juicio demostrando su inocencia. Destacó que: "Más allá de presumir mi inocencia, yo soy inocente, y sé que la verdad será mi salvación. Libraré esta batalla gracias a mi fe en Dios y bajo la premisa de que no estoy solo. Juntos llegaremos al final de esto".

God knows, I know, that he tried his best to hold on. But at least when he died, he knew that he was loved, not only by his parents, but even by me, a near stranger, I also loved him. And with all of that love he knew that he didn't come into this world alone, and he certainly didn't leave it alone."

Cuando me reuní recientemente con Shirley Temple Black, la gran estrella infantil de la década de 1930 y 40, no nos dijimos nada el uno al otro en un primer momento, simplemente lloramos juntos, pues ella podía compartir ese dolor conmigo, que sólo amigos cercanos como Elizabeth Taylor y McCauley Culkin saben que tengo.

No les cuento esto para ganar su simpatía, sino para ilustrar mi primer punto importante: No sólo los niños estrellas de Hollywood han sufrido la pérdida de su infancia. Hoy en día, es una calamidad universal, una catástrofe global. La infancia se ha convertido en la gran víctima de la vida moderna. A nuestro alrededor se están produciendo decenas de niños que no han tenido la alegría, que no han obtenido el derecho, que no se ha permitido la libertad, o saber lo que es ser un niño.

A los niños de hoy se alienta constantemente a crecer más rápido, como si este período conocido como infancia es una etapa pesada, que hay que soportar y acabar lo más rápidamente posible. Y sobre ese tema, no tengo duda que soy uno de los mayores expertos del mundo."
